Bridge, chimney and tall structure inspection in the North East

Close visual and zoom inspection of bridges, chimneys, towers and other tall structures, without access platforms or rope access for the survey. Engineers get organised, located imagery and an optional 3D model to assess from the office.

What it is

What a drone structure inspection involves

The structure is captured with overview passes and close-up zoom imagery of its key elements: bearings, joints, parapets and spandrels on a bridge, or brickwork, banding, caps and lightning protection on a chimney. Images are organised by element and location.

A 3D model built from the same capture lets engineers measure, compare and plan repairs. Because nothing needs to be erected, inspections can be repeated to track a defect over time.

Typical structures

  • Masonry and steel bridges
  • Industrial chimneys and stacks
  • Towers, spires and tall buildings
  • Retaining walls, viaducts and embankments
  • Silos, gantries and plant structures

Who it is for

Who uses structure inspections

Structural and civil engineers

Close-up evidence for inspections and assessments.

Asset owners

Records of bridges, chimneys and towers across an estate.

Contractors

Pre-works condition records and repair planning.

Industrial site managers

Inspection of stacks and plant structures without access equipment.

Process

How the work is done

  1. ScopeThe structure, elements to inspect, inspection requirements and access constraints.
  2. PlanAirspace, permissions and any road, rail or water constraints agreed.
  3. FlyOverview and zoom passes around every element in scope.
  4. ReviewImages organised by element, with defects annotated.
  5. ReportInspection images, report and optional 3D model for the engineer.
Accuracy and limitations

Inspection-grade detail

Zoom imagery records cracks, spalling, missing mortar and corrosion from a safe distance, at a resolution engineers can assess. When measurements are needed, the 3D model is controlled with ground control and an accuracy report is supplied.

What affects the result

  • Light under decks and on shaded faces
  • Wind around tall structures
  • Traffic, rail or water constraints on take-off
  • Ground control, for measured outputs
Questions

Structure inspection questions

How does a drone inspection help the engineer?

It provides close-up, located imagery of elements that are hard to reach, so the engineer can assess condition in detail from the office and plan any hands-on work.

Can you inspect a bridge over a road or railway?

Yes, with the right permissions. Flights over roads, railways and waterways are planned with the asset owner and the relevant authorities.

Can you fly close to a working chimney or stack?

Flights are planned with the site team around plant operation, and kept clear of hot exhaust.

Can you track a defect over time?

Yes. The same viewpoints can be flown again, so images and models from different dates can be compared.
